It’s unbelievable how some of our (Villa) fans want Lambert out after the Fulham result. I’m a season ticket holder and although I’ve seen the club in a better state, sacking the manager at this stage of the season is far from likely to rid us of the problems that the club are currently facing. I’m pretty sure the appointment of Lambert had the fan’s backing.
The board - without coming out publicly and confirming it - seem to have set Lambert with the task of consolidating our place in the league whilst lowering the wage bill. If this is the case, it would surely put an answer to the conundrum of having Grant Holt on loan rather than recalling Darren Bent from Fulham.
Whilst I find it frustrating in footballing terms how we’re performing and that our new squad lacks strength in depth and seasoned Premier League players, the situation that the club finds itself in due to what seems to be a questionable chief executive and owner is hardly the most appealing project to work under as a Premier League manager.
The fact that Lambert took on the job speaks volumes to me, and likely speaks volumes to the board. However, it is the board and the lack of backing and ambition that is the real issue here. If attitudes don’t change at boardroom level, I can see us remaining a mid-table club toying with relegation for some time.
I’d consider myself a realist, alright? But in philosophical terms I’m what’s called a pessimist.
